Associate Athletic Trainer

Team assignments of primary coverage will be at the discretion of the Director of Sports Medicine & Director of Athletics Recreations & Physical Education.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides primary medical care in collaboration with Team Physicians, consulting physicians, University Health Services and/or other Allied Health Providers. Provides clinical evaluations, examinations, and diagnosis of emergent, acute, subacute, and chronic neuromuscular conditions and certain medical conditions in order to minimize subsequent impairments, functional limitations, disability, and societal limitations to the University student-athletes.

  • Implements and supervises prevention of injury and illness guidelines, including but not limited to environmental concerns, acclimatization and general well-being.
    Delivers rehabilitative services under physician guidance utilizing clinical decision making in constructing and supervising rehabilitation protocols.

  • Implements and supervises the return to play of injuries and illnesses to University student-athletes in collaboration with Strength & Conditioning Coaches.

  • Provides and supervises emergency care of injuries or illnesses to University student athletes, including the use of emergency equipment and supplies. 

  • Conducts annual pre-participation screenings to ensure that all University student athletes are in NCAA compliance as per the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook. This includes, but is not limited to, a sickle cell solubility test, EKG, comprehensive health history, immunizations, baseline concussion exams, and a physician exam that has strong emphasis on cardiovascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal evaluation

  • Maintains athletic injury, illness, drug and treatment records and maintains confidentiality of the records according to HIPPA and FERPA guidelines.

  • Assists with student-athlete visits for medical clinics. 

  • Collaborates with team physicians and Retriever Integrated Health Services and other outside medical providers regarding student-athlete health care.

  • Collaborates with outside physicians and other health care professionals regarding student athlete health care. Schedules outside medical appointments, with particular attention to the student-athletes primary medical insurance, obtaining needed referrals or pre-certification of procedures as required.

  • Assist student-athletes arrange for transportation to and from physician or medical appointments as needed.

  • Accompany student-athletes to physician appointments when deemed necessary for continuity of care

Administrative job responsibilities may include the following areas:

  • Co-responsibility for maintenance and quality control of equipment and facilities.

  • Co-responsibility for screening medical certification planning.

  • Co-responsibility for Excess insurance claims.

  • Co-responsibility for educating athletes, coaches, and peers on injuries and illnesses, safety procedures, and NATA and NCAA medical compliance related issues.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional duties include:

  • Maintains the appropriate professional CEU’s as delineated by the NATABOC.

  • Maintains CPR/AED for Professional Rescue as delineated by NATABOC.

  • Maintains State Athletic Trainer License as delineated by Maryland Board of Physicians.

  • May act as a Clinical Instructor for students within CaATe athletic training program.
