Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Physical Education

JOB DUTIES

30% - Marketing, Outreach & Campus Engagement
 

  • Manages and directs all marketing efforts for the department including numerous sports and recreational programs through advertising, participant experience, promotions, etc.

  • Promotes athletes, teams, and recreational sports by focusing on strategies like sponsorships, endorsements, social media engagement, fan loyalty programs, and data-driven content to build community, enhance fan experience, and drive revenue.

  • Responsible for growing engagement among students, the campus community, and the Santa Cruz community at large.

  • Develops and implements new strategies to engage Banana Slug fans at all games and events.

  • Identifies and develops business partnerships between community groups, university departments, alumni, and other organizations.

  • Partners with all affiliated groups including booster clubs, alumni, student groups, and other University contacts to drive awareness and support for all department initiatives.


25% - Development
 

  • Assists with external areas of development and corporate partnerships.

  • Generates financial support for athletic & recreational programs through various options including: annual gifts, major gifts, capital projects and corporate sponsorships.

  • Assists with developing and implementing a strategic plan to solicit funding and support through major gifts, annual gifts, planned gifts, grants, and other funding avenues as needed.

  • Assists with all other revenue generating and external areas of the department, including licensing royalties, merchandise, capital projects, planned giving, marketing/promotions, athletics communications, and corporate sponsorships.

  • Assists with planning and executing special events on the University’s campus, in the University’s community and in the University’s region to strengthen external relationships, increase revenue and promote the University and the department.

  • Maintains regular communication/correspondence with all partners, donors, and sponsors (as well as potential donors/sponsors), to ensure satisfaction with strategic partnerships.

  • Assists with efforts to fundraise for The A&R Banana Slugs Foundation.

  • Works/coordinates with University Advancement and Alumni Office on donor strategies/asks and with events such as Alumni regional reunions, and on-campus team reunions.


25% - External Relations and Administration
 

  • Leads external relations and provides strategic oversight for all external units, including marketing, communications, and engagement. Acts as a key advisor to athletics leadership on external strategies and long-term planning.

  • Drives revenue growth through creative and innovative ideas for corporate sponsorships, sales, and fundraising. Oversees annual giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and the cultivation of donors.

  • Implements innovative promotions and advertising plans involving digital and social media to increase fan interaction and enhance the game-day experience.

  • Manages relationships by cultivating and maintaining relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders, including media representatives, corporate sponsors, donors, alumni, and other external organizations.

  • Engages in event management by assisting with or overseeing the coordination and promotion of special events, such as alumni gatherings, fundraising events, and student-athlete award ceremonies.

  • Participates in all departmental meetings, campus initiatives and committees relevant to the overall mission of the department and campus community and enhances campus health and wellness initiatives.

  • Works collaboratively with various support services in the Athletics & Recreation Department and campus constituents (i.e. Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, Team Physicians, Dining Services, Sports Nutritionist, Sports/Clinical Psychology, Student Health Center, etc.).

  • Drives a personal or university vehicle to execute programs or attend professional development conferences.

  • Is responsible for ensuring all activities adhere to NCAA and university policies and regulations.


20% - Physical Education
 

  • Plans, coordinates, schedules and executes all physical education classes by providing a foundation for learning on all levels for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Provides an environment for students to engage in various physical educational programs where they can learn proper exercise techniques and appropriate training methods.

  • Creates and manages Physical Education course schedules, instructors, and grades.

  • Conducts proper planning for additional course offerings and analyze attendance trends to inform reduction or addition of sections. Implements new course offerings based on industry standards and popular trends.

  • Reserves facilities for classes and ensures all classes have proper and adequate equipment.

  • Hires, trains, schedules and evaluates Physical Education instructors.

  • Oversees Physical Education budget.
