Job Description
USTA PNW is seeking an experienced, innovative, entrepreneurial, creative, data-driven, marketing and communications leader to take our organization to the next level. We have a bold vision that calls for doubling the scope of our impact in seven years. Our success largely depends on our marketing strategy and tactics so that we can engage new players, donors, sponsors and providers. Recent third-party research suggests that there are an additional 1.3 million people who want to play tennis that currently are not. Not only is there a massive consumer acquisition opportunity, but the Senior Marketing Director of Marketing and Communication will also inherit an organization with a growth mindset that is prepared to invest in a marketing strategy and team that will tap our potential and live our vision.
The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications – in partnership with the CAO and COO – will have full support in identifying the resources, branding, messaging, people, and platforms needed to build a successful and long-term strategy that aligns with our growth goals. We seek a leader who will build our brand through the power of storytelling that authentically attracts and engages donors and participants, while also meeting organizational revenue and participation goals. This individual makes data-driven decisions, engages digital and cloud-based platforms, and leads-by-example in supporting a creative and agile team and several vendors.
Reports to: Chief Advancement Officer
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications (SDMC) is the principal marketing and communications leader of USTA PNW and reports to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO). In turn:
Internal staff: Sr. Marketing Manager, Marketing Coordinator, Social Media Content Creator.
External vendors: PR and Communications Vendor; Special Projects and Revenue Growth Vendor; and vendors for various digital platforms/tactics, website development and maintenance; and as needed.
Global Duties
Strategy – Develops and continually updates a multi-channel marketing and communications strategy to different audiences and across communication platforms.
Growth Driver – Personally owns an enterprise-wide mindset and actively works to help USTA PNW business units grow revenue, participation, and key metrics across activities.
Brand Storyteller – Develop, position, and safeguard USTA PNW’s global/core brand and program brands both internally and externally with participants, donors, and partners.
Capacity Building & Marketing Industry – Continually research and implement current, best-of marketing strategies, tactics, technologies, and platforms to best engage stakeholders; understand market dynamics, participant and donor behaviors, emerging applicable trends, and proactively adjusts to shifts in order to sustain long-term growth
Management – Provides oversight of and scales the marketing and communications department (internal and/or external) with overall responsibility for its management, administration, strategic direction and results.
B2B, B2C, Fundraising Focus – Balances developing and managing marketing strategies for 1) driving participation and registrations for direct delivery of events, programs and services; 2) messaging and positioning for cultivation, stewardship and philanthropic fundraising and sponsorships; and 3) supporting and engaging with a network of third-party tennis providers.
Communication and Writing Skills – Externally, the SDMC must have strong communication and decision-making skills necessary to relate effectively with the various USTA PNW external constituents. Internally, the SDMC will work collaboratively to develop, oversee, and communicate the annual marketing and communications campaign/activities plan that will support the daily operations of the USTA PNW business units.
Responsibilities
- Strategy, Implementation, Driving and Measuring ROI
- Create innovative and scalable marketing strategies and structure implementation plans that build the brand, drive increased awareness, and result in increased revenues and participation in programs and services.
- Interface with business-unit leadership in order to align marketing expertise, budget and prescribe plans with programmatic, local and historical knowledge.
- Lead marketing and communication teams in creating aggressive awareness, revenue, and growth targets and meeting seasonal and annual goals effectively.
- Lead marketing and communication teams in implementing traditional marketing (PR, communications, print, local media and events) and digital marketing campaigns across a broad spectrum of marketing channels, in alignment with unique program, services, and special events.
- Maintain ability to track real-time ROI in order to remain agile and to make timely adjustments by tactic or market. Lead direct reports in prioritizing as adjustments are made.
- Manage existing budget; experiment with innovation budgets; justify continued growth of funding, staff, and resources that are in line with increasing success and growth.
- Brand Building, Social Media, Digital
- Oversee digital content, engagement and social media strategies. Lead a team with experience in related technical skills and excitement for areas including paid social media advertising, search engine marketing, adwords, email marketing, e-commerce strategies, influencers, reputation management.
- Oversee creation of dynamic content and digital story-telling in order to position for partnerships, sponsorships and fundraising revenue.
- Oversee creation of platforms for stakeholders and participants to tell their stories of impact.
- Identify technologies and methods to create ongoing engagement and a unique experience.
- Establish industry-best web presence that enables visitors to take action and be engaged.
- Develop campaigns and assets that inspire and turn visitors into participants, supporters, donors.
- Demonstrate philanthropic impact and build strategies for retention and re-engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Entrepreneurial and innovative spirit with a builder mentality.
- Minimum of a Bachelors’ degree. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10+ years of marketing and digital experience including serving as key driver in creating strategy.
- Demonstrated understanding of marketing mix, brand development, story-telling, and aligning marketing goals with fundraising and global organizational strategy.
- Leadership experience with the ability to mentor and professionally develop a team of multiple direct reports both in-person and remotely.
- Focus on continuing education and identifying emerging marketing trends and how to leverage for organizational expansion and success.
- Thorough knowledge of marketing and sales principles, brand alignment, new media and digital strategies, new business development, and a demonstrated track record of success in these areas.
- Ability to thrive in changing markets and complex, organizational dynamics; ability to identify the opportunities and translate them into actionable strategies.
- Experience creating content and digital strategies that drive engagement and user acquisition.
- Experience working with brands across different markets.
- Project management and budget alignment with attention to detail and follow up.
- Strong analytical abilities; know the strategy, support conclusions with data, analyze outcomes, and scope out key insights to establish continuous optimization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including writing, copy-writing, and public speaking experience, and ability to develop and manage relationships with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated management and strategic planning skills preferred.
- Computer competency in Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite.
- Database familiarity, especially with SalesForce, Tableau, Pardot.
- Project Implementation/Management: ability to execute and prioritize multiple projects to meet aggressive deadlines supporting multiple brands and partners across multiple channels.
- Extremely detail-oriented, highly organized with excellent time management skills. We need someone who is self-directed and able to multitask.
- Must thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial work environment that is growth oriented, fast-paced, and serves multiple brands and channels of distribution.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with peers, partners and senior management.

Conditions of Hire
- This position serves the Pacific Northwest Section (Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and parts of Idaho). This role will be required to reside within Oregon or Washington.
- Must have the ability to continually pass a background check.
- Must complete the USTA Safe Sport online education course. Link provided with offer of employment. Initial online course takes approximately 90 minutes.
- Must sign the USTA PNW Offer Letter, Employee Handbook, and all required policies and procedures upon hire.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- This job operates out of a home office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
- This position will sometimes, but not often, need to work evenings and/or weekends based on event calendar and needs.

Compensation and Benefits
- $150,000 Annual Salary + $10,000 year-end bonus potential
- 33 days of Paid Time Off annually
- 12 Annual Paid holidays each calendar year
