Background
The Pac-12 stands at a defining moment in its history. Founded in 1915, the league’s rich legacy of athletic and academic excellence spans over 100 years. Supported by world-class service and empowerment, Pac-12 student-athletes have earned more than 500 NCAA team championships. Now with a renewed and bold vision for its future, the Pac-12 has undergone significant transformation on its journey to launching a new collegiate athletics conference, custom-built for both the modern-day student-athlete and an evolving college sports landscape.
Under the leadership of Commissioner Teresa Gould, the Pac-12 embarks on creating a new legacy, composed of nine member universities, a one-of-its-kind and state-of-the-art broadcast production facility in San Ramon, CA., and a reimagined commercial enterprise that is uniquely positioned to drive strategic partnerships, brand enhancement, revenue generation and other growth opportunities to unlock new and lasting value for both its member universities and its student-athletes. Currently composed of Oregon State University and Washington State University, the league will welcome seven new full members beginning with the 2026-27 season, including Boise State University, Colorado State University, California State University, Fresno, Gonzaga University, San Diego State University, Texas State University and Utah State University.
Position Summary:
A key member of the senior leadership team, the SVP, Deputy Commissioner is responsible for overseeing several critical member-facing departments within the Conference, ensuring exceptional services and support, as well as a consistent membership experience. The SVP, Deputy Commissioner will supervise department leaders in the areas of Football, Basketball, Olympic Sports, Compliance & Governance, Video Operations, and Student-Athlete Engagement.
This senior leader will be responsible for implementing new strategies and initiatives that result in competitive excellence across the league, and value-added services to Pac-12 members. The SVP, Deputy Commissioner will work closely with the Commissioner and will serve as a stand-in representative for the league in meetings and events related to the NCAA, CFP, CCA, and other industry matters. The Deputy Commissioner will manage, develop, and support a broad team
of athletics administrators and will be the direct staff liaison to Pac-12 Athletics Directors and other key stakeholder groups as assigned. This position reports to the Pac-12 Commissioner and is based remotely within either the Pacific, and Mountain timezones plus Texas with moderate travel required for meetings, events, and campus visits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for day-to-day conference operations and managing associated staff including but not limited to sports management, compliance & governance, championship events, student athlete engagement, officiating, video replay, scheduling, etc.
Provide strategic leadership and sound decision-making to help drive the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the Pac-12.
Serve as the direct staff liaison to the Pac-12 Athletics Directors and develop and maintain productive relationships with other stakeholder groups including Board of Directors, Faculty Athletic Representatives, Senior Women Administrators, Head Coaches, and other Pac-12, member university, and NCAA groups.
Lead and support efforts to modernize sport administration including but not limited to through technology integration, data analytics, advancement of officiating, and best practices to improve performance and competitiveness.
Manage department budgets, ensure resource alignment with strategic priorities, and drive operational efficiency across sports management, compliance and governance, and championship event operations.
Champion holistic initiatives for student-athlete leadership, wellness, and professional development in collaboration with Pac-12 staff, university stakeholders, and NCAA partners.
Develop key external relationships and partnerships including with NCAA staff, other Conference peers, Bowl Partners, Media Partners, Coordinators of Officials, Commercial Partners, etc.
Be responsible for driving strong relationships and experiences in all membership touch points and mentoring Pac-12 staff members in delivering strong, credible, collaborative membership strategy and services.
Work proactively and collaboratively with the Commissioner and Conference staff to develop and manage key strategic initiatives which serve to enhance the Pac-12’s brand reputation, sport competitiveness, and national positioning.
As directed by the Commissioner, represent the Pac-12 at events such as bowl games, tournaments, industry conferences, NCAA, CFP and other national meetings.
Build and sustain a high-performing, inclusive, and values-based work culture and work collaboratively across departments to ensure operational excellence.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
15-20 years of experience as a collegiate athletics administrator at a Division I conference office or athletics department or adjacent industry; preferably with experience as a Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, senior campus administrator, and/or Athletics Director.
Strong mission alignment, demonstrated knowledge of the collegiate athletics landscape, and passion for preserving and enhancing the legacy and reputation of the Pac-12
Strong executive presence and professionalism.
Proven success in hiring, supervising and developing a staff with various experience and skill levels.
Experienced in managing multiple department budgets and ensuring cost efficiency.
Strong knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
Demonstrated success influencing complex collegiate athletics governance, student-athlete wellbeing, NIL, and national policy discussions.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across collegiate athletics.
Ability to manage and work successfully and collaboratively through change and ambiguity, building consensus and driving data-informed decisions which advance the Conference’s mission.
