Associate Athletic Director and Director of Academics for Student-Athletes

The Associate Athletic Director & Director of Academics for Student-Athletes (ASA) reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs who supports the portfolio of Integrated Support & Development. The Director is responsible for providing overall leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the ASA department. In this capacity, the Director oversees and guides all aspects of academic support for student-athletes, ensuring that services foster their academic, intellectual, social, and personal development. Additionally, the Director leverages expertise and best practices to enhance departmental offerings and serves as a key member of the Integrated Support & Development leadership team.

This position upholds the integrity of Oregon State University with a clear, unambiguous commitment to compliance of all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pac-12 regulations in academic support services offered to student-athletes.

40% Leadership and Operations:

  • Directs the administration, management, and supervision of academic support services for more than 500 student-athletes.

  • Develops and actualizes relevant vision, mission, and goals.

  • Develops comprehensive plans, procedures, systems, and standards for the delivery and assessment of services and programs.

  • Provide leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate short- and long-term plans for ASA.

  • Determines, plans, and administers short and long-term operating needs, including capital and operating budgets and Memos of Understanding.

  • Determines resource needs and priorities and implements plans, including procurement of equipment and technology to support the academic needs of student-athletes.

  • Serves as the budget authority and assigns budget authority levels to staff where appropriate.

  • Oversees the BEST Summer Bridge program and manages the program budget.

  • Resolves problems and issues affecting the department and directs measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency through assessment, analysis, and evaluation.

  • Serves as the primary departmental liaison with other University departments and Athletics.

  • Works with head coaches to meet academic policies and goals that are established for the respective team.

  • Compiles data and reports to various University constituents on the academic performance and eligibility of assigned student-athletes in compliance with institutional standards and NCAA requirements (including Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate).

  • Ensures each student-athlete is provided with academic support services and academic advising consistent with the requirements for NCAA academic eligibility requirements.

  • Prepares end-of-term academic performance reports for student-athletes and delivers data to Athletics leadership to support decision-making, reporting, and presentations.

  • Oversees the identification and submission of eligible student-athletes for Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll recognition, ensuring compliance with conference guidelines and deadlines

25% Campus Partnership and Engagement:

  • Serves on the Integrated Support & Development Leadership Team; contributes to decisions on the overall strategic direction of the ISD portfolio.

  • Develops and maintains open and positive working relationships with faculty and staff across campus, particularly with the academic advisors and other offices that work directly with student-athletes.

  • Maintains open and frequent communication and positive working relationships with student-athletes, the Faculty Athletics Representative, the Athletic Department administration, the Office of the Registrar, coaching staff, and support units -athletes.

  • Serves as a resource for the interpretation and application of matters related to University policy and procedures.

  • Represents Academics for Student-Athletes and serves on various University committees (e.g. Academic Advising Council, Athlete Admissions Committee, Athletic Advisory Committee, Council on Academic Counseling, University Admissions Committee, and various Athletic Department Committees).

  • Serves as a representative of the University at state, regional, and national organizations and committees (e.g., N4A, NACDA).

15% Supervision

  • Provides leadership, vision, and supervision for the Academics for Student-Athletes team, including 11 professional staff and over 40 peer educators.

  • Oversees hiring, training, onboarding, advising, and performance evaluation to foster a collaborative, student-centered, and high-performing team culture

  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to team members to support their growth and success.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Set performance goals for direct reports and conduct regular evaluations to ensure accountability and excellence.

15% Academic Counseling

  • Meet regularly with assigned students as a resource, provide proactive counsel regarding academic performance as well as academic requirements of the University, Pac-12, and NCAA.

  • Proactively monitor and track the academic performance and NCAA eligibility of assigned student-athletes to ensure compliance with institutional standards and NCAA requirements.

  • Engage with teaching faculty, academic advisors, peer educators, and mentors regarding student academic progress throughout each term.

  • Provide recommendations and intervention strategies to student-athletes based on their academic performance and well-being needs.

  • Prepares reports and communications on the academic progress of assigned student-athletes for distribution to coaches, administrators, and other stakeholders.

  • Lead meetings among ASA Academic Counselors, Athletics Compliance, and the Office of the Registrar Certifying Officers to foster collaboration, communication, and proactive problem-solving to meet student-athlete needs.

  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and their family members to discuss the services and resources provided by ASA and the University.

  • Provide support to additional sports as needed and during staff transitions to ensure continuity of academic services.
