Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance will support and enhance the Cal Poly Athletic Department. The incumbent will educate, oversee, enforce, and interpret conference and NCAA regulations. The position will develop, direct, supervise, evaluate, and oversee all aspects of Athletics compliance and eligibility certification in conjunction with various university officials for the 20 Division I level sponsored programs, including strategic planning, policy implementation, comprehensive rules education and monitoring systems, interpretations, waivers, investigations, and self-reporting of violations.
Essential Job Functions
1. Manage overall operations of the Athletics Compliance Office.
2. Lead the university’s efforts to maintain institutional control by developing systems that protect and assist coaches, student-athletes, the Athletic Department, and the university in following the rules. Systems must be implemented in all areas of the NCAA Operating Bylaws: ethical conduct, personnel, amateurism, recruiting, eligibility, financial aid, benefits, and playing and practice seasons.
3. Continually monitor, audit, evaluate, and seek to improve compliance systems and those who utilize them to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
4. Serve as the university’s primary liaison in the area of NCAA legislation and governance. Provide feedback to the NCAA and conference offices on proposed legislation. Ensure that university constituents are aware of new NCAA, conference, State of California, and CSU legislation and policies related to athletics. Develop and direct the implementation of specific procedures to ensure compliance with new legislation and policies.
5. Supervise, direct, and evaluate full-time compliance staff and student assistants.
6. Provide leadership in the eligibility certification process for freshmen, transfers, continuing student-athletes, and international student-athletes. This includes certification of NCAA academic and amateurism requirements. Work closely with the Faculty Athletics Representative, Eligibility Coordinator, Enrollment Services Department, and Director of Academic Services to ensure accurate certification of eligibility.
7. Develop and implement comprehensive rules education program for coaches, student-athletes, Athletic Department staff, and university constituents to foster a commitment to compliance.
8. Manage compliance technology platform to streamline monitoring and reporting activities.
9. Administer NCAA pre-season team meetings. Ensure that student-athletes are provided rules education on NCAA rules and institutional policies.
10. Serve as the primary liaison to the NCAA national and conference offices regarding rules interpretations.
11. Lead the university’s efforts to investigate and self-report violations of NCAA and conference rules. Review facts and case precedent and serve as the university’s liaison to the NCAA and conference office to determine whether violation occurred and appropriate penalties to impose.
12. Serve as Athletic Department’s lead for submission of waivers of NCAA and conference rules.
13. Serve as a member of the Athletics senior staff.
14. As assigned by the Director of Athletics, provide oversight of administrative operations and resource management for a select portfolio of sports programs. Conduct annual performance evaluations and on-going program assessment.
